What is End-of-Day (EOD) Drawdown?

LogToLast Quantitative Team Verified October 2026 Quantitative & Prop Risk Encyclopedia
Direct Quantitative Definition (BLUF)

End-of-Day (EOD) drawdown is a prop firm risk rule where the maximum loss limit is recalculated solely at the official market close (typically 4:45 PM or 5:00 PM EST) based on realized account balance. Intra-session spikes in open, unrealized profit do not move or tighten the drawdown floor during active trading.

Formula

Mathematical Calculation

Drawdown Floor (Next Day) = Max(Floor (Today), Closed Balance (Today) - Max Drawdown Limit)

The new drawdown floor for the subsequent day (d+1) is set by comparing the existing floor with the closed balance at day d minus the fixed drawdown threshold. If today's closed balance is higher than yesterday's high-water mark, the floor steps up; if today was a losing day, the floor stays unchanged.

Simulation Model

EOD Drawdown vs Mid-Day Spikes

Baseline: $100,000
Max Risk: $3,000
1

Morning: Account balance is $100,000. Floor is set to $97,000.

2

10:30 AM: Open trade surges to +$4,000 ($104,000 open equity). Floor remains at $97,000.

3

1:00 PM: Market reverses; trade closes at +$1,000 ($101,000 balance).

4

5:00 PM Close: Settlement balance is $101,000. Floor for tomorrow updates to $98,000 ($101,000 - $3,000).

5

Advantage: Under intraday trailing, the floor would have ratcheted to $101,000 and breached the account upon pullback. Under EOD, the trader remains safe with $3,000 of buffer.
